This drawing by Erin Greenough references a vintage medical lithograph and contemporary surgical instruments. The original piece is hand drawn using black ink and a dotwork/pointillism technique.

This drawing is inspired by the concepts of French philosopher Michel Foucault, particularly those in his 1963 work titled "The Birth of the Clinic". Vintage medical drawings have an incredible artistic quality often admired by enthusiasts and medical professionals alike. However, enamoured by their beauty, we can forget about the subject that lies beneath. Not only were many of the experimental procedures done on these patients deeply dehumanizing, but the people who's cadavers were used were often members of the lower class. This separation of body and identity can be referred to as the "medical gaze", a term coined by Foucault in the title work.
